Movie Review: Barfi!

This is the movie I had been waiting for. It is emotional but fresh. Barfi!  is the story of a deaf and mute man named Barfi, whose charm lies in his silence. An energetic Ranbir Kapoor makes for his character's deficiencies with his effortless gestures and actions. The two female actors, Priyanka Chopra and Illeana D'cruz , blend perfectly into their respective roles. And, of course, the director Anurag Basu deserves kudos for this magnificent contribution to Hindi cinema.

The story is set in Darjeeling and revolves around the differently-abled Barfi. This person wants to live life king-size and is a prankster. Barfi, falls for Shruti( Ileana D'Cruz), and despite his deficiencies wins her over by his charms and a big heart. But there comes a problem, Shruti is already engaged.

Jhilmil(Priyanka Chopra) is another show-stealer in her role as an autistic girl. This girl comes from a rich family, but her family hardly cares for her emotions. The other part of the story revolves around the bonding that develops between Barfi and Jhilmil.

Bollywood-debutant Ileana plays her role of Shruti perfectly. A good part of the story is focused on the romance that comes to fore between Shruti and Barfi, before she breaks his heart.

The story progresses in a back and forth fashion. The story is simple and has its moments of a love-triangle and existence of a little mystery concerning Jhilmil. Despite these usual elements ( and some very few technical flaws), the story is fresh, sweet, engaging and full of humour. Barfi pays tribute to Charlie Chaplin and many of Barfi’s rib-tickling acts are inspired by this great comedian.

Barfi! is full of award-winning performances and is a delight for the audience. I have never seen the audience clapping in such appreciation after the movie's climax. A definite must watch!

My Rating: ***** Must Watch
