Movie Review : Student of the Year

I went to this one with low expectations. I am not saying that I was overwhelmed but, but I was surprised.
'Student of the Year' is a typical Bollywood college movie with usual elements of glamour, romance, competition, jealousy and friendship. Yet it is enjoyable.

The movie is about some students who study at the St Teresa School (rather fantasy-land), a little about their personal lives and mostly about a weird three-stage tournament that decides the 'student of the year'. The movie largely focuses on the relationship between Abhimanyu and Rohan and how it changes when romance and competition mix in. (The tournament, its format and its announcement, refreshed memories from 'Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. Did anyone else feel like this?)

The movie relies on some really witty dialogues and some very hilarious doses of humour. Another thing the movie bets on is glamour with revealing clothes and  dance sequences. The dance sequences (Oh! There are a little too many of them) are the dull moments of the movie. The story is largely incoherent. I couldn't make out if any two persons of the group in focus throughout the movie were friends or not. But if you want to enjoy a bubbly Bollywood movie as this, you ought to leave a part of your brain at home.

Newcomers Alia Bhatt (who plays Shanaya), Siddharth Malhotra(as Abhimanyu) and Varun Dhawan(as Rohan) manage to pull off a respectable (if not great) performance. And I am no one to rate KJo's direction. One wonder's how he manages to make the movie enjoyable in-spite of a weak storyline.

My Rating - 2.8/5 Watchable-Time Pass ( I couldn't decide between 2.5 or 3, sorry!)
