Movie Review : Highway

I've always liked movies about journeys. One good thing about them is that they don't just stop at a point. They can entertain you even without a solid plot by moving forward steadily. Imtiaz Ali's 'Highway' is the latest addition to this genre of films.

The movie poster

This is the story of Veera (Alia Bhatt), a rich Delhi girl and a gangster, Mahabir (Randeep Hooda) brought together by unusual circumstances and brought closer by a long journey through the northern states of India. Veera has been depicted as a girl tired of her life in the city with all its rituals and 'show-off'. Mahabir is someone against rich people, owing to some injustices meted to him in the past. Veera is kidnapped just a few days before her wedding by Mahabir's gang. Initially morose, she begins liking her life as an abductee. She finds true freedom in her kidnapping and as the journey proceeds develops feelings of love towards Mahabir, which doesn't go unrequited.

The plot is beautifully simple - no strange twists, no fight scenes and has a blend of good comedy. This a very light, innocent and a feel-good movie.

Ranbir Hooda and Alia Bhatt have played their parts well. I think this role will do good to Alia's career like Kareena's role in 'Jab We Met' did to hers. Imtiaz Ali deserves applause for bringing something different every time. The cinematography team will be a major stakeholder in this movie's success - they have beautifully captured sceneries. For me personally, some images of Himachal brought out waves of nostalgia. A R Rahman's music score is great especially the track - 'Maahi Ve'.

Beautiception!

I think if you watch it with expectations of a good movie about a journey, you won't be disappointed.

My Rating : 4/5
